Verizon on Tuesday became the first American carrier to offer the Samsung Omnia. The Omnia will be priced at $249.99, after a $70 mail-in rebate and the signing of a 2-yr contract agreement. The carrier doesn’t provide full specifications for its version of the handset but confirms a very close similarity to the original version previously limited to Europe and Korea. While switching to CDMA and EVDO, the Verizon Omnia continues to carry a 3.2-inch, 400×240 touch display with haptic (vibration) feedback and a customized on-screen keyboard; a touchpad at the bottom lets users control normal d-pad functions without losing precision.
It also provides a five-megapixel camera with an LED flash, Wi-Fi and more advanced media playback than Microsoft offers with support for DivX and XviD video along with regular media formats. Storage isn’t mentioned, but in foreign versions usually combines at least 4GB of built-in storage with a microSDHC card slot.

T-Mobile today announced the Samsung Gravity, the phone comes with built-in support for AIM, ICQ, Windows Live and Yahoo chats. A 1.3-megapixel camera, media playback with microSD storage and stereo Bluetooth audio put it in the middle of T-Mobile’s lineup. The Gravity expectedly supports MyFaves calling and in T-Mobile guise comes in either aqua/white or lime/gray color combinations. It should reach shelves by Tuesday and will sell for $50 alongside a two-year contract.

Samsung has only just introduced the T*Omnia in its home country but may already be enroute to the US within a matter of weeks, a claim from BusinessWeek. Samsung is negotiating with a U.S. carrier with an aim to roll out the phone in America by the end of this month. But it is not clear wether U.S. consumers will have access to the upgraded phone or its old version, which has a slightly smaller touch screen with lower resolution. The new version has a 3.3-inch LCD (versus a 3.2-inch screen) with a much higher 800X480 resolution (versus the earlier 400X200).
