 HTC S743

Finally today, HTC revealed that it will bring out a North American version of its S740 slider. The S743 switches from the previously Europe-only HSPA 3G to a dual-band 850MHz/1,900MHz link suited to AT&T in the US and Rogers in Canada. This aside, the S743 is basically the same with the S740, hence it has that diamond shaped back cover and the weird, elongated case that hosts both an alphanumeric and a full QWERTY keyboard. HTC plans to ship the Windows Mobile 6.1 phone sometime in the first three months of the year as an unlocked, unsubsidized device. Pricing hasn’t been named but should be high without carrier discounts.

Verizon announces Samsung Omnia for $249.99

Verizon on Tuesday became the first American carrier to offer the Samsung Omnia. The Omnia will be priced at $249.99, after a $70 mail-in rebate and the signing of a 2-yr contract agreement. The carrier doesn’t provide full specifications for its version of the handset but confirms a very close similarity to the original version previously limited to Europe and Korea. While switching to CDMA and EVDO, the Verizon Omnia continues to carry a 3.2-inch, 400×240 touch display with haptic (vibration) feedback and a customized on-screen keyboard; a touchpad at the bottom lets users control normal d-pad functions without losing precision.

It also provides a five-megapixel camera with an LED flash, Wi-Fi and more advanced media playback than Microsoft offers with support for DivX and XviD video along with regular media formats. Storage isn’t mentioned, but in foreign versions usually combines at least 4GB of built-in storage with a microSDHC card slot.
